WHERE DO WE GET THE AIR WE BREATHE?
One day while Alexi and Pexi were sitting in a tree, Pexi asked, “Where do we get the air we breathe?”
“Well, we get some of air from this very tree,” said Alexi.
“I don’t see air coming from this tree,” Pexi replied.
“That’s because it’s oxygen, which is invisible.”
“I don’t understand how a tree gives us oxygen.” said Pexi.
“In the process of photosynthesis, plants use energy from the sun, water and minerals from the soil, and carbon dioxide from the air,” Alexi explained.
“The plants then give off water and oxygen. Then, people and other animals breathe in the oxygen and use it to release energy from the food we eat. We breathe out carbon dioxide, which the plants use to help create their food through photosynthesis.”
“So, we breathe in oxygen from the plants and breathe out carbon dioxide for the plants, while plants take in carbon dioxide from us and give off oxygen for us,” Pexi said.
“Correct-o-mundo,” answered Alexi.
“Ah, thank you mister tree for that breath of fresh air,” said Pexi with a grin.
