February is Black history month. Black history month celebrates the achievements of African Americans.

Booker T. Washington was a civil rights activist. He was a freed slave who promoted education and equality.

Harriet Tubman was an escaped slave. She helped other slaves escape through the Underground Railroad.

Dred Scott was a slave who sued for his freedom when taken to a free state. His actions helped the movement against slavery.

Matthew Alexander Henson was an African American explorer. He was one of the first people to reach the North Pole in 1909.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a great civil rights leader. He worked for racial equality.

Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a bus to a white man. She helped fight racism.

Garett Morgan was an African American inventor. He was the first person to patent a traffic signal.

Jesse Owens was a great African American athlete. He won four gold metals at the 1936 Olympic Games.

Dr. Charles Richard Drew was an American Doctor who started the idea of a blood bank. His idea has helped save countless lives.

Thurgood Marshall was the first African American Justice of the Supreme Court. He was appointed in 1967.

Shirley Chisholm was the first African American woman elected to congress. She served seven terms and ran for President.

Mae C. Jemison was the first African American woman in space. She flew on the space shuttle Endeavor.

Bill Cosby is a famous African American actor and comedian. He has created many television programs and movies about African American families.

Oprah Winfrey is a respected talk show host. She has one of the most watched talk shows in American history!

In 2009, Barack Hussein Obama made history when he became the first African-American President of the United States.
