KATRINA THE CATERPILLAR
By Sarah Fitzgerald
There was once a family of six, tiny, vivid green caterpillars who lived on the wrong side of the tree. The family lived in the dark or at least to the littlest one named Katrina it seemed that way.
She dreamed of what it was like to live on the other side of the tree. The side the sun warmed. Where they didn’t have to worry so much. Where the fresh green leaves covered the tall tree. She also dreamed about becoming a beautiful butterfly. One who could fly high above the tree, into the clear, blue sky. Fluttering around in the warmth of the sunlight.
The oldest brother made the adventure first, he was very small, but brave. He curled up in a ball. As the days went by, he became bigger and bigger until one day, he awakened and was no longer a caterpillar, but a beautiful butterfly with bright colors of yellow and orange. Katrina knew it was time for him to fly away. The other caterpillars hugged him goodbye, and wished him well, but Katrina, the littlest one, cried. She couldn’t help but wonder what if her big brother never came back to visit. What if the world was too big for him or too beautiful, and he simply did not want to come back. She knew she would miss him, and every night she said a prayer for her big brother.
Soon it was time for Katrina’s sister to leave the family to make her own family. The others hugged her goodbye and wished her well, yet Katrina cried tiny silver tears. What if the world was too big for her and too beautiful and her sister simply did not want to come back. Every night Katrina said a prayer for her.
Then her other sister became a beautiful butterfly with bright vivid colors of purple and hues of sapphire. The others hugged her goodbye and wished her well. Katrina cried. What if the world was too big for her, too beautiful, and she simply did not want to come back. Every night Katrina said a prayer for her.
Finally it was time for little Katrina to leave the tree. Make a life on her own. She was very scared though. What if the world was too big for her. Too beautiful. What if she did not want to come back. She curled up into a tight ball, and spun herself into a tight cocoon. It was dark inside. Very dark. After weeks of darkness, she burst free from the cramped little cocoon.
She fluttered into the bright sun light. Soon she was on top of the world, surrounded by her loved ones and their families. But little Katrina went home to see her mother and father often. She realized that the other side of the tree wasn’t everything she’d imagined, and that home wasn’t such a bad place to be.
